Kuala Lumpur Global Round
Kuala Lumpur Convention Center
June 24-30, 2024
Registration will close on May 15th. Please note that this Global Round will be our largest and, because of its expensive venue, the costliest to attend. Its size will also mean very long waits for buses and meals and a much lower chance of acceptance into events such as the Scholar’s Show and Flag March, as well as a lower chance of qualification for the Tournament of Champions. We recommend that delegations looking for a more affordable, less crowded option consider Bangkok, Seoul, Stockholm, or Dubai.

Welcome Letter
Letter from the Founder
The artist Austin Kleon once advised his students, "Draw the art you want to see, play the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the products you want to use."
In designing the World Scholar's Cup, my team and I have always kept something similar in mind: to design a program we wish we could have attended when we were students.
That's why the World Scholar's Cup may look like a competition, but isn't one at all. It's a celebration of learning. (Just ask the "ninjas" who raided the Taiwan Round in 2012 to demand more guides to study.) It brings together many subjects, because before we can begin to specialize, we need to see the big picture. It challenges teams to work together, because there's nothing harder or more inspiring than knowing that someone else depends on you. And it deals with serious global issues without taking itself too seriously, because I'm convinced that before we can fall in love with learning, we have to find the fun in learning.
Whether you join us just for just a regional round or continue with us all the way to the Tournament of Champions at Yale University, you're becoming part of a community of scholars and leaders that will last a lifetime.
Daniel Berdichevsky
Founder and Alpaca-in-Chief
Mr. Daniel Berdichevsky
Daniel Berdichevsky is the program's founder and alpaca-in-chief. In high school, he achieved the highest score in the history of the United States Academic Decathlon; he has been a professional nerd ever since. For Daniel, Decathlon was life-changing: it introduced him to the joy of teamwork, inspired him to overcome his fear of public speaking, and launched him into college with new confidence. It was after studying science, technology, and society and public policy at Stanford and then public policy at Harvard that Daniel had three realizations: first, that there was no opportunity like the one he had been given for students around the world; second, that such a global program could be for students in the 21st century what Decathlon had been for him in the 20th; and, third, that he had just discovered his life’s work. Daniel has also led strategic innovation for CASIO, worked (with great non-success) in venture capital, and attempted (with even greater non-success) to write musicals. Daniel loves little more (except maybe the song Havana) than meeting and learning from students around the world.

Team Events
Scholar's Bowl
Every team in the theater. Every team with a clicker. Every question harder than the one before. Your team will work together to solve analytic questions and multimedia challenges. Click your answers before time runs out, and don’t be surprised if you’re asked to connect a poem you studied to a clip from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s loud. You might even hear a team shout the wrong answer— hoping you’ll click it. It's strategic. What will you and your teammates do when you disagree? Remember, it's not the first team to answer correctly that gets all the credit. You’re all racing the clock. But, the clock is fast and the stakes are high.
*No electronic devices can be used throughout the event.
Collaborative Writing
Speak with the power of your pen (or pencil!) You’ll be given six prompts, from each of the six subject areas, ranging from creative scenarios to explore to persuasive arguments to make. Two easy rules to remember: as a team you only need to write three of the six, and each of you needs to answer a different prompt. You’ll first have 25 minutes to prepare together, then 45 minutes by yourself to write the most compelling piece possible, then 15 minutes to review one another's work at the end. Whether you craft a poem or compose a five-paragraph essay, make sure your work excites and challenges you, because that means it'll excite and challenge your reader too.
*No electronic devices can be used throughout the event.
Team Debate
Each team debates three times, on motions across all the subjects, from policy to poetry. You may be arguing whether parents should have access to surveillance cameras at schools—or whether women make better superheroes. Debate is your chance to apply all that you’ve learned to make the most persuasive case you can. And, win or not, after each debate, you’ll give the other team feedback on how to improve.
Each of you will speak up to 4 minutes. But first, you’ll have 15 minutes to research your argument, with full access to the Internet. Use your time—and choose your sources—wisely!
Two-thirds of our students have never debated before; over half are EFL learners. The rest sign up because they’re debaters. For new debaters, it’s a great introduction; for experienced debaters, it’s a challenging new style.
Scholar's Challenge
It’s multiple choice, so make multiple choices. The Challenge looks like any other test, but with an alpaca-powered twist: you can mark more than one answer per question. The fewer you mark, the more points you can earn if you’re right. (Yes, that means you can finally guess C and D... and also A, B, and E.) Apply your knowledge of the six subjects successfully and you can win medals in one, two, or all of them.
You’ll soon discover what all World Scholars do: that even if you think you’re an expert in science, you might win a medal in the arts, and that the best way to prepare for a test that touches on everything is to talk through it all with your team, day by day.
Play your cards right, and you could earn enough medals to warrant a neck brace.

Tournament of Champions
The Tournament of Champions is more than just another Global Round. You’ll have the chance to interact with and learn directly from Yale students and faculty. You’ll attend a special panel on college life and on how to leverage your World Scholar’s Cup experience as part of your admissions portfolio. You’ll eat Yale dining hall food. You’ll meet our keynote speakers, including a Yale University professor. And you’ll come away knowing what it’s like to be a student at one of the world’s greatest universities. You can also look forward to the Yale Ball, where you can dance (or not dance) with your fellow scholars from over fifty countries, a special Thanksgiving meal, and beautiful historic venues for the Scholar’s Bowl, Debate Showcase, and Scholar’s Show - the Shubert Theatre and Yale's own Woolsey Hall. During a scavenger hunt that will take you to every corner of Yale’s campus and the surrounding community, you’ll encounter real alpacas, too, including our very own Painted Warrior—the official alpaca of the Tournament of Champions—and his faithful sidekick Trevor.

Our Story
Instead of focusing on memorizing facts, WSC is all about applying them and relating them to the world around us. You don't need to know that Victor Hugo was a realist; you need to know what artwork might have interested him the most. Whatever you do, you're celebrating learning, even if you don't think you like learning. Is it challenging? Yes. Can it be frightening? Yes.Will it be fun? Absolutely. Welcome to the World Scholar's Cup; welcome to the greatest festival of learning in the world.

Not only were the topics extremely engaging and unique, the whole idea of the program was thrilling: debating with other international delegates, furiously scribbling essays on various subjects (like the Psychology of War!), clenching the clicker tightly and getting all ready to press the buttons...

Access the WSC 2022 Virtual Platform
After more than 50 years since its inception, the Winter Simulation Conference will be held in Asia for the very first time in 2022! Join us virtually, or on-site at Marina Bay Sands, the iconic landmark of Singapore, in one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in Asia from December 11-14, 2022!
The theme of 2022 WSC is derived from Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative “Singapore Reimagined.” The COVID-19 pandemic brought us a “new normal” and technological advances in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, Internet of Things, quantum computing and virtual reality (VR) are changing the way humans live, work, play and communicate. Building on the “Smart Cities” focus of last year’s conference, 2022 WSC will “Reimagine Tomorrow” to evaluate not just living in an urban future where cities are safe, green and environmentally-secure with seamless power, water and transportation networks, but also working in an environment where both sustainable high-tech manufacturing and novel services play an essential role.
Well-known for its efficiency in logistics services and in the midst of developing the world’s largest next generation container port, we will look at Singapore’s future logistics and port systems integration and how simulation provides a good way to help the country plan its next move.
In addition, with more than a dozen wafer fabrication facilities in operation or under construction in Asia’s “Silicon Island,” the Modeling and Analysis of Semiconductor Manufacturing (MASM) subconference will be given particular attention at 2022 WSC.
“Reimagine Tomorrow” relies on significant advancement from many fields such as modeling, experimentation and data analysis coming together to tackle various challenges. We invite scientific papers and case studies that highlight innovations in both theory and applications, with a specific focus on the use of not just simulation but also related technologies such as AI and VR.
A number of exciting changes will be implemented to make 2022 WSC even more attractive. Case studies will be integrated into the full paper tracks to enhance cross-fertilization between academia and industry, further supported by a Case Study Competition. The program roster will also be significantly enhanced to enable a productive hybrid format that accommodates the needs of virtual attendees from time zones across the entire globe.

The World Scholar’s Cup (often abbreviated WSC) is an annual international academic program. More than 15,000 students from over 65 countries participate every year.[1]
The program was founded by DemiDec, in particular by Daniel Berdichevsky, in early 2006.[2] The first WSC took place in South Korea in 2007 at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies.[3] The World Scholar's Cup aims to teach students with interesting, not-taught-in-schools lessons, and finding common ground between people of different backgrounds.
Tournament format[edit]
Founder Daniel Berdichevsky showing off the WSC's mascot, the alpaca, at the 2011 local Jakarta Round
Teams participating in the World Scholar's Cup are generally composed of three students - they can be from the same or different schools, however teams of two are permitted too.[4] Teams may participate in any regional round. If teams are unable to attend a regional round, but would still like to participate in the Global Round, they may try to qualify through a "wildcard".
Qualifying for the annual Global Round requires that a team:
exceed a 18,000 point threshold at a Regional Round (formerly 20,000 and changed to 18,000 in 2023)
earn a wildcard at a Regional Round (through strong point performance); or
apply for an exceptional wildcard (granted only in narrow circumstances)
To qualify to the Tournament of Champions (ToC) at Yale University, New Haven, teams must:
Exceed a point threshold at a Global Round (which is usually around 50,000 points but may vary)
All members have qualified at a Global Round
Two members in a team must have been teammates at the Global Round they qualified from
The tournament is divided into junior and senior divisions, and participation in a division depends on the ages of the students of a team. Participants[a] who are 14 years of age or older are classified as senior.[b] In the 2017 Hanoi Global Round, a new Skittles Division, was formed, for students aged 8–12. In regional rounds, both divisions participate separately but simultaneously, while global rounds have the events of each division staggered, where the junior division competing in an event a day before the seniors' event. Closing ceremonies are typically held separately as well.
Events[edit]
Each Regional Round consists of four main events: the Scholar's Challenge, Collaborative Writing, The Team Debate, and the Scholar's Bowl.[4] In addition to these four events, non-competitive activities take place in select tournaments. These activities are both social and academic. The academic activities each require knowledge of a curriculum made at the start of each season, which is divided into a section about history, social studies, art and music, literature and media, science and technology, and a special area.

The Scholar's Challenge[edit]
The Scholar's Challenge is a 120-question multiple choice exam given to each individual competitor to complete within 60 minutes. Prizes are awarded to top participants in each subject and to both top-scoring overall teams and individuals. The award for the highest score in the Scholar's Challenge was formerly known as the Asimov Award, but in 2022, it was renamed the Jac Khor Award in honor of the World Scholar's Cup team member who used to write Challenge questions but died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A feature of the Scholar's Challenge implemented in 2015 allows participants to select multiple answers per question. Though each question has only one correct answer, choosing multiple answers allows the participant to earn points inversely proportional to the number of answers chosen. For example, if a participant chose one single answer, and if it was correct, they would score a point; if they chose two answers and one was correct, they would score 0.5 points; if they chose three and one was correct, they would score 0.33 points, and so forth. If time was running out, a participant could shade in all five answers and automatically win 0.2 points.
Collaborative Writing[edit]
This event is based on arguments, with students picking one of six different prompts associated to each subsection of the given curriculum. Each participant on a team must pick a different prompt. Participants pick one side of a topic and write for, against, or about it critically. Any writing form is allowed. While previously, computers and phones were permitted, a change occurring in late 2022 banned all devices in this event. This rule was likely set due to the rise of ChatGPT, which made it harder for scholars around the world to get their citations and information. There is a rubric that scholars are judged on for their essays on the official World Scholar's Cup website.
At the beginning of the event, students have 20 (Previously 30) minutes to work with their teammates to discuss and research their arguments. Following the collaboration period, students have 40 (Previously 45) minutes to write their essay. There is no word minimum or maximum, and students are expected to cite sources. Following the writing period, students then have 15 minutes to collaborate again with their teammates to edit one another's work, but they may not finish a teammate's essay.
Team Debate[edit]
All teams have assigned rooms and arguments. In the room, teams will have 15 minutes to confer within the room before the debate begins. Teams may use World Scholar's Cup materials[c] or any outside resources to prepare in the 15 minute preparation time. However, devices and external sources are banned afterwards.
Each debater will stand in front of the room for the length of his/her speech. Speakers may use notes, but should not read their speeches in their entirety. Students may speak for up to four minutes, however there is no penalty for speaking up to four minutes. The judge will signal time left using knocks, with two knocks meaning the speaker must stop speaking. Between speakers, teams will have 60 seconds to prepare before the next speaker is called.
Before the end of the debate, the competing teams are required to give positive and constructive feedback to the opposing team for roughly 90 seconds, before the judge(s) announce a winning team. The winning team will then proceed to a designated room and the non-winning team to a different designated room, where each will face another team with the same number of wins and non-wins.
One cultural aspect of the debate is the 'lollipop'. In order to promote positivity and self-improvement, the World Scholar's Cup had replaced the term 'losing' with 'lollipopping' since 2015. This change was also reflected in the debate schedules that each team receives.
The Scholar's Bowl[edit]
The clicker used for the World Scholar's Cup's Scholar's Bowl.
The Scholar's Bowl is a quiz bowl usually held in a theater. Team members work together to answer multiple choice questions that are displayed on a large screen.
In order to answer the questions, each team of students is given a clicker that connects to a scoring computer on stage. Students then choose their answer by pressing their choice letter on the clicker. Students are given 15 seconds to submit their answer. The questions gets harder each time and worth more points than the previous one. There are sometimes rapid fire questions which have to be answered in 5 seconds, worth even more points.
The Scholar's Bowl implements many types of questions, many tend to include references to pop culture, and often include WSC in-jokes. This is often the last educational event of the competition before the awards ceremony.

The Scholar's Scavenge[edit]
The Scholar's Scavenge is an annual scavenger hunt at the Global Round and the ToC, and first took place in 2009 in Singapore.
Students are teamed up randomly and given tasks. At least one person in the team has a camera, and the tasks are completed by taking photos and videos. The tasks may relate to the curriculum, teamwork, organizer, or just silly. Each task is worth a certain number of points depending upon the difficulty. At the end of the scavenge, the leader collects the photos and score them. These scores do not count toward the scores in the competition as a whole, but are only used for this event. Teams with the highest scores can be called for an award in an award ceremony.
The Debate Showcase[edit]
External videos Global Round Senior Debate Showcase at The Hague on YouTube (1 hour 7 minutes 46 seconds).
Debate Showcase is an additional event, with the round's top 8 junior and senior debaters taking part. At Regional Rounds there is only one Debate Showcase with both juniors and seniors taking part. Regardless, 8 students debate in each Showcase.
The format mirrors the format of the Team Debate event, but the students instead debate in teams of four on stage in front of the rest of the participants.[4] When all eight speakers have gone, the host of the Showcase invites volunteers from the audience and debaters from the showcase to step forward and share their general thoughts on the topic that was debated.
Additionally, top-scoring debate participants in each round are the judging panel for the Showcase. When it ends, the panel announces the winners.
The Scholar's Ball[edit]
The Scholar's Ball was first added to the tournament in 2011 at the Global Round in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The idea spawned from a conversation about the competition where one party misheard "Scholar's Bowl" as "Scholar's Ball".
The Scholar's Ball encourages mingling, dancing, and the chance to "look sharp". Students are required to come in formal wear. Some students refer to it as a "pseudo-prom" or "nerd-prom". It was introduced to allow students mingle with students from different countries.
The Scholar's Show[edit]
Two students perform in The Scholar's Show.
The first Scholar's Show occurred in 2010 at the regional round held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It originated from several students playing "We Will Rock You" playing during an intermission. When the song was over, Berdichevsky invited any student wanting to showcase their talent to come forward.
Student performances range from vocal and instrumental performances to beat boxing, dancing, drinking hot sauce and magic tricks. The Scholar's Show is held at all two-day rounds, and at each Global Round and the Tournament of Champions.
Flag March[edit]
The Flag March happens at the end of every Global Round and ToC before the Awards Ceremony. In the Flag March, there is one representative (flag bearer) from every country participating. The flag bearers carry the flag of their country and march to the stage,[7] followed by a staff giving a farewell speech.
The World Scholar's Camp[edit]
In 2012, the World Scholar's Camp was created, and took place in Singapore in December 2012. It included seminars and outings to various locations in Singapore.
Camps take place at various schools and cities through the year.[8]
Awards Ceremony
The Awards Ceremony, also known as the Closing Ceremony, takes place just before the end of a round. Traditionally, staff members stand on stage and announce the winners for the entire round. Winners either get a gold medal, silver medal, a pineapple (another form of trophy), or a trophy. The winner of the round gets the tallest trophy, and gets to interact with the props on the stage. Awards are also given to scholars who scored relatively well overall, but did not receive a gold medal or trophy for any particular event. These were initially called Da Vinci Awards, but their name was changed to the Asimov Award in 2023, as the award for the highest Challenge score, which was formerly named Asimov, had been renamed. Later, a certificate will be shipped to all participants.[4]
Very Emotional Farewell To The Year's Theme[edit]
Began in 2018 ToC, with scholars together saying emotive byes to the Havana theme and destroying the set of it, the Very Emotional Farewell To The Year's Theme is an event where scholars and staff ultimately destroy the year's theme in a (hopefully) non-violent way.[d] The event happens at every ToC at the New Haven Green.
Curriculum[edit]
A Collaborative Writing prompt sheet in the Manila Global Round in 2019; students can choose one from the six subjects, however, each teammate must choose a different subject.
The World Scholar's Cup curriculum has six subjects. The theme changes annually.[9] Students are often given questions that require critical thinking skills as well as their basic knowledge to come to a conclusion rather than focusing on memorization. For instance, instead of asking on which date an experiment was performed, the question would ask, "Which artist would be most likely to oppose this experiment?"
The subjects are:[10]
Science & Technology
Literature & Media
Art & Music
Special Area (custom each year)
History
Social Studies
Until 2009, mathematics, economics,[9] and trigonometry was included in the curriculum. However, in 2010 it was eliminated in order to better address the goals of the competition stating that it is inflexible and difficult to debate. In 2008, the World Sholar's Cup added a 'film' category to its visual arts section, and in 2010 added a "music" category to its art section.[citation needed]
Until 2013, the World Scholar's Cup released curriculum guides each year—one for each subject. The guides were available free-of-charge on its official website. Starting in 2013, topic outlines and theme-relevant material was made freely available to students through their website. The World Scholar's Cup recommends connecting each section of the outline to the given theme and how they connect or impact society.[11]
Until 2014, there was a Current Affairs section, which was replaced by Social Studies. To address its absence, Current Affairs would from thereon out be integrated across all six subjects instead.[citation needed]

World Stroke Congress 2024
On behalf of the World Stroke Organization, we look forward to welcoming you to the 16th World Stroke Congress (WSC 2024) in Abu Dhabi, UAE from October 23-26, 2024.
Mark your calendars early and start getting ready for the next edition of WSC! Each year our Congress gets better, more exciting, and more informative, and we can’t wait to show you what next October will bring. In addition, our international community grows bigger and more engaged with each passing Congress. The knowledge, experience, science, and discoveries exchanged by our community, and the connections and collaborations formed, are amongst our most cherished achievements.
Let’s keep up the good work and meet again in Abu Dhabi in 2024!
